Here is some toughts that I have and I hope that you help spreading the words about the importance of education of dogs and owners for this new year to come!

Soon many many puppies will come to their new home this Christmas and the year to come. And many many of them will stand no chance of success. Many many of them will be rehomed, surrendered to shelters or abandoned before turning 2 years old.

All because they did not get the tools for fitting in this world and to fit into the life their family is living. They will slowly develop “problem” behaviours which 95% could have been predicted and avoided with puppy training. Yet most people don’t do puppy classes or being proactive in their training. Because their puppy is “not yet” bad.

Then when their puppy becomes an adolescent dog they will see problems come and now is no longer easy training now it’s problems solving which is much harder, more time consuming and most people will not have the right knowledge to fix it.

There is so many amazing rescue organisations making big difference on rescuing dogs.

But there is one thing we all (organisations, professional and dog owners) need to talk more about and that is how to PREVENT this. We need to talk about the importance of early education of puppys and their owners.

A big chunk of the dogs are being abandoned is by families that could not have them no more/ did not want to have them no more because the dog is having issues some bigger som smaller that complicates the life for their owner.

We need to talk about the root of the problem because the SYMPTOMS are the abandoned dogs the ROOT is lack of knowledge and commitment with people that get the dogs. We must talk more about puppy education because that’s where the answer lays for the family’s that get dogs.

Nobody wants a dogs that destroy your house, pees inside, is aggressive towards people, is aggressive towards dogs, reactive, can’t be home alone or scared. It is hard to live with a dog like that and not that wonderful life many picture it would be having a dog. Of course no one is perfect not us and not the dogs but these are the most common problem behaviours and they could ALL be prevented with education of the person and the dog.

WE MUST TALK MORE ABOUT THIS! The puppies have right to get the tools to be come the dog you wanted

Why reward based training?

Remember why the wolfs start following people. It was not because they give them a nice ear scrub it was because they found food around them. It benefited the wolf to be around humans.

To work with reward based training gives you a chance to get a dog that work better. A communication the dog will understand. Dogs do things that will benefit them self. A reward does not always need to be a treat can also be a toy, to smell something, to say hello for someone. Anything that means a lot for the dog. You would not want to work without salary so give a reason for your dog to listen to you.

A puppy that get rewarded for peeing outside learn faster then a puppy that get punished for peeing inside.

Dogs don’t think and communicate like us.

To train with threats “like if you don’t come now I will pinch your ears or yell at you” training is to me not a healthy relationship.

No human would want this behavior in their partner/family.

The best animals trainers in the world work reward based.

A dog that being understood is a more happy dog why wouldn’t you want that for the dog that you love?

To get a bone almost the same size as you is a great reward💖

Most people loves puppy’s, they are so cute and funny! But what we must not forget that it is a baby dog! And having a baby is not always easy. They will have to have a lot of training and investment of your time to become a good individual.

As a dog trainer I’m being contacted a lot to fix problem behaviours, a lot of this problems could have been avoided if the dog would have been trained right from the start when it was a puppy. Yet there is very few people that take puppy classes, because they think a puppy will be easy and they don’t have problems yet. For sure a little puppy of 2 month old can’t destroy so much when left alone, but you will be surprised how much they can destroy when being 6 month. If we do not train right from the start we can created a lot of stress and anxiety and it’s much harder to fix that then to prevent it from ever happening.

There is so much a puppy will have to learn in a very short amount of time before it’s an adult. Being house clean, to be able to be left alone, walk in a leash without pulling, be social to dogs and people, not be aggressive, dont be scared, don’t run off and so much more. And it’s our job to make sure it learns in a good way so it can become that great dog that we wished for. They see us as their family and it’s time we see them the same way and treat them with the love and respect that they deserve. To take a class to learn the basics and get good routines is something I wish everyone would do! It’s a very good investment for the future. It could prevent so much problems and also to avoid that so many puppy’s and adult have to change homes or being left at shelters because people can’t handle them anymore. It’s mainly the puppy’s experiences that will either make it a calm and happy dog or can make it an aggressive or scared dog or a nervous dog that bark all the time. We have all the chances in the world to create good dogs, so let’s hope more people do it! They grow so fast! 💕
