These leashes are guaranteed to be made of vegetable tanned leather. So non-toxic!
90% of all leather produced in the world today is chrome tanned. It is used for everything from car seats, sofas and belts to bags, shoes and clothing. Chromium is a heavy metal that makes the leather soft and supple and, above all, it allows the leather to be tanned in a couple of hours.
Chrome tanning came about during industrialization at the end of the 19th century when the demand for leather became so great that you simply could not wait three weeks for vegetable tanned leather.
Vegetable tanning is a natural way to preserve leather, which has been used for thousands of years. Instead of heavy metals, bark from trees and other fibers from the plant kingdom are used to tan the leather. This way, the natural grain and life of the leather are not destroyed.
So what is the difference?
Chrome-tanned leather is quick to produce, which of course makes it cheaper. At the same time, you get leather that can be allergenic and carcinogenic, both for you and your dog.
Vegetable-tanned leather is completely non-toxic but takes longer to tan, which makes it slightly more expensive. However, the price difference is much more noticeable if you were to use 10 square meters of leather for a car than if you were just making a collar or leash for a dog.
Unfortunately, it is difficult, even for an expert, to determine straight up whether a leather is chrome-tanned or not. A clear indicator is if the back or core of the leather is gray. But that only works if the leather is not dyed through. The easiest way is to buy the leather from someone you know for sure does not use any toxins.
Tärnsjö Garveri, located thirty kilometers from Sala in Västmanland in Sweden, is Europe's only tannery that manufactures TÜV-marked, environmentally certified and vegetable-tanned leather. The tannery also has a reception radius of only ten kilometers for 90% of the cowhides.
